For Belgian supermarket chain Colruyt, we found a way to speed up check-out times. As soon as a customer puts their fruit or vegetables on the scale at the till, a smart camera takes a picture of the merchandise, recognises it and proposes the right label to the customer. No more scrolling through an endless list of exotic fruits, looking for bananas. Now, it all happens in the blink of an eye. All customers need to do, is confirm that they are indeed bananas.
We really put our Deep Learning platform to the test with this application, and it didn’t fail to deliver, successfully recognising over 97% of products autonomously. What is more: with every interaction, customers help improve the algorithm—something we like to call a textbook example of collaborative intelligence.
