Empty gas bottles sometimes end up in heaps of trash where, needless to say, they’re a hazard to waste maintenance workers. Not knowing what’s hidden under piles of waste, they regularly end up being injured when shoveling rubbish into the shredder.
To prevent these carelessly tossed gas bottles from taking any more lives, we teamed up with Viu More to introduce AI in Renewi’s waste management facilities. Using cameras and a custom trained algorithm, we easily spot the gas cylinders before they reach the shredder.
All in all a relatively simple computer vision task that uses object detection, but makes a big difference in making the workplace a lot safer.
